LUMS (Lahore University of Management Sciences) is a world-class academic institution with a well-established record of success and ambitious plans for the future. LUMS works towards its goal of providing a world-standard education while fostering research and intellectual development in the country. Owing to the sensitive research work in its bio-laboratories, LUMS cannot afford the risk of a power outage for even a fraction of a second. It requires soft transfer and load sharing between the generators and the mains with no interruption whatsoever.
The institution had initially installed 3 diesel generators and 1 mains supply. In 2014, Pyramid Automation took on the task of improving the system in three phases. The first phase covered synchronising the 3 diesel generators with the mains supply using DSE86xx series control modules. Following the completion of the first phase, Pyramid Automation began the second phase of the improvement by synchronising two further diesel generators with the power centre from the first phase.
In the third and final phase, Pyramid Automation synchronised an 11 kVA gas turbine engine (CAT/Terberg) with the first and second phases via fibre optics. Pyramid also installed the DSEP100 protection relay for the mains decoupling function, which serves to detect faults on the mains supply and take the application offline using ROCOF and vector shift detection.
