The charger's remaining capacity is used to charge the battery. To keep the battery "full", the battery charge only needs to be slightly above this value. The bulk charge after the engine has started is provided by the DC charging alternator. For example, for a constant panel load of 2 A, a 5 A or 10 A charger is considered sufficient in most generator applications.
