Generation AFRICA is an organisation that identifies and empowers exceptional young Africans who will take responsibility for their families, communities and nations. It also connects businesses from around the world with this dynamic generation. The aim of the project was to provide power to remote commercial and luxury safari lodges in the most cost-effective way possible, and to create a livelihood for local communities.
The load variations at the lodges fluctuated between 5kVA and 100kVA and could remain at either end of the scale for long periods, which made this an ideal situation for synchronisation systems. When demand is low, a single generator is used, while during periods of high consumption the other generators are brought on line, minimising the load on the engine.
This approach also made planned maintenance and engine downtime possible without interrupting the power supply; furthermore, since power could be transferred automatically to the second generating set in the event of a possible unplanned engine failure, the lodges were kept from being left without electricity.
