AstraZeneca is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. The site in Lund has around 1,200 employees engaged in the research and development of new medicines and medical aids used in the fight against respiratory disorders. Pon Power AB, Sweden’s Caterpillar dealer, was commissioned to provide standby emergency power with automatic mains failure detection for the research facility, and Pon Power turned to DSE distributor Jo’s Marin for the control solution.
The specifications of the generator sets were 2 x Caterpillar C-18 fully electronic engines, each rated at 700 kVA, with Leroy Somer alternators. The controllers selected for the total 1.4 MVA system were 2 x DSE5510 providing auto-start and synchronisation, together with 1 x DSE5560 providing mains control and load sharing with the mains. This power plant is tested for one hour each month at 60% load against the mains, and once a year with a full mains failure test. The generator set installation was approved by the Swedish Electrical Safety Board without any criticism.
