Reliable power was vital to the company’s daily operations; for this reason, it was decided to install 4 emergency power generator sets with a total capacity of 6.6 MVA. Managed by DSE8610 controllers, the generators can synchronise and share the factory’s entire load in the event of a complete power failure across all nine feeds; however, they can also share load with the live mains supplies when only one to eight feeds fail.

The nine incoming mains feeds are monitored by DSE8660 modules, and in the event of a power failure they automatically communicate with the DSE8610 controllers to initiate the starting procedures for bringing the generator(s) online. The DSE8610’s intelligent systems automatically control all aspects of the synchronisation and load sharing of the four generators, sharing the load across one, two, three or four generators depending on the power demand.

If a live feed is present on one or more of the incoming mains feeds, the system (DSE8660 + DSE8610) automatically manages all aspects of load sharing with the mains supply to provide the required additional power; and when power is restored, it provides an uninterrupted return, stopping the generators after cooling them. The standby power system has been integrated into a larger PLC system using the MODBUS connections of the DSE controllers. This enables engineers and facility managers to have full control within the wider framework of the BMS systems.
