A facility in Lebanon producing cardboard from 100% recycled paper and used board has found a sustainable way to run its operations independently of the mains. Waste brought to the site first passes through a sorting process, separating usable paper and cardboard from the remaining refuse. This material is then turned into pulp to be made into cardboard.
The remaining waste is burned to generate the steam used in the drying process; the surplus steam then drives the steam turbine to provide AC power for the production process. Five generators are installed to start the turbine for the first time and to support the application during periods of high demand.
All five generators are controlled by DSE8610 modules and operate in automatic synchronisation with one another, while a DSE8660 manages parallel operation and load sharing with the turbine. As the drying stage of the process has a particularly high energy demand, keeping the generators in reserve and only bringing them online when the energy demand requires it (for example when the dryers are running or when volume is high) provides an extremely cost-effective solution.
